Description
Pink Splash Variegated Weigela is a showy shrub that is so vibrant and colourful, there is no denying its abundant beauty.
Gardeners plant weigela shrubs for the blooms... and the Variegated Weigela has the most vibrant flowers out of any variety! They open light pink with a deep pink throat and their colour deepens to a deep rose with age. This combination of colour gives it that "variegated" look when in bloom. The blooms smell like citrus, which is why they attract so many hummingbirds and butterflies.
The foliage of the Variegated Weigela is almost as decorative as the flowers. Each elegrantly etched green leaf bears a striking white to light-cream border. You'll have plenty to admire until the plant erupts in a blanket of pink again.
The plants are somewhat spreading and wider than they are tall. They look great alone or in a group or hedge. They're very low-maintenance, too- all you do is give your plant a light pruning right after it blooms.
Weigela is a genus of between six and 38 species of deciduous shrubs in the family Caprifoliaceae, growing to 15 m (3-15') tall. All are natives of eastern Asia. The genus is named after the German scientist Christian Ehrenfried Weigel. The leaves are 515 cm long, ovate-oblong with an acuminate tip, and with a serrated margin. The flowers are 24 cm long, with a five-lobed white, pink, or red (rarely yellow) corolla, produced in small corymbs of several together in early summer. The fruit is a dry capsule containing numerous small winged seeds.
The first species to be collected for Western gardens, Weigela florida, distributed in North China, Korea and Manchuria, was found by Robert Fortune and imported to England in 1845. Following the opening of Japan to Westerners, several Weigela species and garden versions were "discovered" by European plant-hunters in the 1850s and 60s, though they may have already been known to locals. The British Weigela national collection is held at Sheffield Botanical Gardens; along with the national collection of the closely related Diervilla genus. The German Weigela national collection, Sichtungsgarten Weigela, is in Buckow, Maerkische-Schweiz.
