Description
This beautiful Aster begins as a hint of pink on the ends of petals which begin as a bright lime green, graduating to lemon yellow and white. As the flower matures, it's entire head becomes a gorgeous scarlet red that deepens to a very strong wine red and nearing the end of its time, the tips of the petals become purple-black. It's leaves are a dark green outlined in purple-black.
Bonita Aster has beautiful, fully-double pompon flowers that color completely. The 2 inch/5 cm diameter flowers remain attractive even when aging. Bonitas flowers are held at a perfect angle for maximum impact and have a flower size that is similar to Matsumoto. Although Bonita crop time is one week longer than Matsumoto, Bonita easily fits into a production program with Matsumoto as both also have a fusarium resistance.
Remove the main flower bud during production to strengthen stems and improve cutting. Mixture of blue, light blue, pink, rose, scarlet and white. Height: 30", 10 to 12" spread.
Bonita means "beautiful" in spanish. Fully double, brightly coloured pompom flowers. Long strong stems.
Callistephus chinensis, commonly called China aster, is a popular annual that provides showy, 3-5-inch diameter blooms from early summer to fall on plants clad with ovate, toothed, medium green leaves. Species plants are infrequently grown because of the huge number of superior cultivars that have arisen over the years. Cultivar height ranges from 8-inch dwarfs to 36-inch tall plants. Cultivar appearance varies from single daisy-like flower heads with yellow centers to fully double flower heads with shaggy to pompom form. Cultivar colors include shades of white to pink, red, blue, violet, purple and yellow. Genus name comes from the Greek words kalli- meaning beautiful and stephos meaning a crown in reference to the flowers. Specific epithet means Chinese.
