Description
Blue Splash is an early flowering, vigorous lobelia with intensive light to dark true blue bicolor blooms with white splashes which literally smother the dwarf compact plants. It's delicate foliage is very fine and lacy and it's flowers, although small make a sweetly bold and playful statement. These are great for neat borders in semi-shady areas and look absolutely gorgeous as groundcovers in beds, and in flower pouches, window-boxes, hanging baskets, planters and containers. Easy from seed, this attractive annual will produce hundreds of flowers and will bloom all summer.
Masses of white flowers splashed with marine blue to give an intriguing and unusual effect. Flowering up to 4 weeks earlier than many trailing lobelia varieties, making it perfect for selling in bloom during Spring. 'Blue Splash' is an easy to grow annual that is deservedly popular for its versatility and long flowering period. Height: 15cm (6). Spread: 25cm (10).
Extra-early Regatta offers the only full line of trailing lobelias. The vigorous plants flower profusely in an extensive range of colours, growing to about 6 to 8 in. (15 to 20 cm) tall and then cascades over the edge of the container.
Lobelia was introduced more than 200 years ago from the region around the Cape of Good Hope. The original wild forms of lobelia have been bred to bloom more profusely. There are both trailing varieties, with billowing masses of blossoms, and more compact bedding types, seldom exceeding 6 inches in height. The 1/2- to 3/4-inch-wide flowers, borne along each stem, are blue on the common varieties, but white and carmine types have also been developed.
Although the plants do best in full sun and moist, rich soil where summers are cool, they will grow surprisingly well in hot areas if given partial shade.
Lobelia erinus (Edging Lobelia, Garden Lobelia or Trailing Lobelia) is a species of Lobelia native to southern Africa, from Malawi and Namibia south to South Africa.
It is a prostrate or scrambling herbaceous perennial plant growing to 815 cm tall. The basal leaves are oval, 10 mm long and 4-8 mm broad, with a toothed margin; leaves higher on the stems are slender and sometimes untoothed. The flowers are blue to violet in wild plants, with a five-lobed corolla 820 mm across; they are produced in loose panicles. The fruit is a 58 mm capsule containing numerous small seeds.
Lobelia erinus is a very popular edging plant in gardens, especially for hanging baskets and window boxes. It has a particularly long flowering period, from mid spring to early autumn. It is perennial in subtropical climates, but often grown as an annual plant in colder areas. It is widely available in Spring as a young plant, but must be kept indoors until all danger of frost has passed. Numerous cultivars have been selected, either with a bushy or a trailing habit, in a wide range of flower colours, including white, pink, red, pale to dark blue, and purple, often with a prominent white eye. Some of the better known cultivars include 'Blue Moon', 'Gracilis', 'Crystal Palace', 'Sapphire', 'Rosamund' and 'Riviela Rose'.
