Description
Stock is no longer commonly grown and often thought of as an old-fashioned plant.
The sweetly fragrant flowers of the short, cool season bedding plants in 'Vintage Mix' are as beautiful as they are aromatic. Though often grown as annuals, stocks are actually semi-woody short-lived perennials. They are coastal natives, distributed from Spain to Egypt, so they are adapted to high winds and salt exposure.
From late spring to summer in cool summer regions, Vintage Mix stock produces short branches lined with spicy flowers that may be antique shades of: copper, lilac, blue, red, carmine, white, burgundy, lavender, peach, rose and yellow. Typically the flowers are four-petaled, but about one-half of the plants in the series will have double blossoms (extra petal rows). These appear against clumps of smooth deep gray-green foliage. Plants with serrated leaf edges usually produce the double flowers.
Vintage Mixed Stocks are excellent base branching 15-20 inch compact plants are free flowering with 60% double fragrant spikes. They are hardy annuals with a delicious perform emitted in the morning, evening and after a rain shower. Traditionally grown in cooler climes, hence it's frequent use in English gardens. Use for window boxes, containers or bedding.
