Description
The red, heart-shaped flower of Anthuriums is really a spathe or a waxy, modified leaf flaring out from the base of a fleshy spike (spadix) where the tiny real flowers grow. The anthurium flowers appear as a roughness on the spadix as compared to a smooth spadix. Anthurium andreanum's heart-shaped leaves most commonly come in red, but also in white, pink and variegated colors. This plant is originally from wet tropical mountain forests of Central and South America (Columbia and Ecuador), so it does best in warm, wet climates. This is one of the few plants that can move its leaves toward or away from the sun (another heliotrope is the sunflower). Anthurium andreanum is a spectacular South American perennial epiphytic plant about 60 cm (23 inches) in height and 40 cm (15 inches) spread, which produces dark green, glossy leaves about 23cm (9 inches) long. The plant's stem lengths may grow to a height of 15-20 inches depending on the size of the spathe, i.e., the bigger the spathe, the longer the stem. Its leaves are usually simple, large, attractively colored and borne on long stalks. The flowering stalk is slender, ending in a fleshy column crowded with many unisexual flowers. They have leafy bracts which may be white, yellow, red, pink, orange or green. There Anthurium andreanum is a nearly continuous show of bright red spathes (spathe leaf), and the protruding yellow inflorescence called the spadix (spadices).
Anthurium andraeanum is a flowering plant species in the Araceae family. It is a monocotyledonous perennial. Anthuriums are herbaceous epiphytes a genus of more than 800 species found in the New World tropics from Mexico to northern Argentina and Uruguay.
Common names for plants in the Anthurium genus include Tailflower, Tail Flower, Flamingo Flower, Flamingo Lily, and Laceleaf and Painted Tongue. Its name comes from the greek words anthos, meaning flower, and oura, meaning a tail, referring to the spadix.
Anthurium andraeanum has gained the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. and is one of the plants listed in the NASA Clean Air Study as effective in removing formaldehyde, xylene, toluene, and ammonia from the air.
