Description
Symphyotrichum novi-belgii also known as New York Aster is the type species for Symphyotrichum, a genus of the family Asteraceae whose species were once considered to be Asters. They are ornamental plants native to Canada and the United States. All of these plants are collectively and popularly known as "Michaelmas daisies".
This is the largest group of Michaelmas daisies, with over 1,000 named cultivars. They are valued for their late summer colour in shades of blue, pink and white. They are best planted in an open, sunny position. While extremely tough, they are susceptible to fungal infections, especially if conditions are not ideal.
Asters are a flowering perennial that provides a stunning amount of blooms in unique colors, for fall sales. The variety Magic Purple is a very early flowering mounded plant which attracts butterflies and bees. Purple Daisy Aster with Yellow Center is the top selling purple Aster, has a medium flower size and the variety is sold under the blue/lavender category.
New York aster is an old time favourite in Czech and Slovak gardens. These plants are carefree and flower over a long period. Since they are so attractive and popular breeders keep coming up with new, improved varieties that brighten up our early autumn gardens.
Magic is the name of the new New York aster series. It makes compact and bushy plants with profusion of double flowers early in the season – while older aster varieties are yet making buds these are flowering freely. Magic asters start blooming in August and continue until mid to late autumn. Moreover, they are more resistant to common aster diseases such as powdery mildew and black spot. Magic Purple aster bears rich purple blue flowers over a long period.
New York aster needs evenly moist, fertile soil of almost any pH value. Grow it in full sun and fertilize annually for profuse flowering. Cut back to ground level in early spring. Hardy to about -40°C (USDA zone 3).
