Description
Calibrachoa is a genus of plants in the Solanaceae (nightshade) family. They are weak evergreen short-lived perennials and subshrubs with a sprawling habit, with small petunia-type flowers. They are found across much the same region of South America as petunias, from southern Brazil across to Peru and Chile, inhabiting scrub and open grassland.
Calibrachoa are closely related to Petunia. However on further examination it has been found that there are major differences in chromosomes, corresponding to external differences and fertilization factors that distinguished the two genera. Calibrachoa is named after Antonio de la Cal y Bracho, a 19th century Mexican botanist and pharmacologist.
Some Calibrachoa are cultivated as ornamental plants, popularly known as "Million Bells". The plants can tolerate light frost and thrive in sun or semi-shade. Plant in a free-draining soil and water only when the soil is almost dry. They can be propagated from tip cuttings, but are frequently grown as half-hardy annuals.
Calibrachoa, commonly called million bells or trailing petunia, is a tender perennial that produces mounds of foliage, growing only 3 to 9 inches tall, along trailing stems and flowers in shades of violet, blue, pink, red, magenta, yellow, bronze and white. Introduced in the early 1990s, all cultivars of Calibrachoa are hybrids with the original species native to South America. They are prolific bloomers from spring to frost. The plant is winter hardy to USDA Zones 9-11 and is most commonly grown as an annual in cooler climates or a perennial in mild ones. While Calibrachoa million bells may be a fairly new species, this dazzling little plant is a must-have in the garden. Its trailing habit makes it perfect for use in hanging baskets, containers or as a small area ground cover.
The 'Noa White' Calibrachoa Plant has medium-sized, 1 1/2-inch, whipped-cream white flowers with yellow throats that will add a clean, neutral color to any arrangement. Noa Million Bells are self-cleaning, not requiring deadheading for non-stop blossoms. Trailing beautifully, Noa White is a fitting accent for any color of foliage or blossoms.
