Description
This lovely, sweet citrus-scented flower has yellow and white flowers, bicolor too. Could this be the "gold-striped" variety described in 1884? An early evening summer bloomer that stays open all night to greet you in the morning with sunny color.
The Marbles Mix collection produces a sweep of 1 1/2" flowers in white marbled pink, rose, red and yellow, and 4 oclock is about the time the striped, splashed, and streaked trumpet-shaped flowers open, suffusing the air with a sweet, orange-blossom scent. Plants (25 in/60 cm) attract hummingbirds by day and moths by night. Great for border or container. Plant in average, well-drained soil after last frost, and this annual will reward you with a summer full of colors.
Mirabilis jalapa. Also known as the Marvel of Peru, this old-fashioned annual is so named because its flowers don't open until about 4:00 to 8:00 PM unless it is cloudy, in which case they could bloom earlier. Because they are easy and fast to grow, it is best to sow them directly in the garden after the last spring frost date. They will likely flower from mid-summer through the first fall frost and may self-sow in milder climates for surprise blooms the following year. Annual. Summer-flowering. Height: 24" to 30".
Mirabilis jalapa is the most commonly grown ornamental species of Mirabilis plant, and is available in a range of colors. The name of Mirabilis jalapa given by Carl Von Linne in 1753 is formed from the scientific Latin Mirabilis meaning "admirable" by allusion to the remarkable colors of its flowers and the specific name jalapa that would refer to its origin in the Jalapa in Guatemala. But the epithet of jalapa could also refer to the city of Xalapa (Jalapa) in Mexico from which came a former purgative drug, named jalap, taken from the tubers of the tuberous jalap. Mirabilis jalapa was cultivated by the Aztecs for medicinal and ornamental purposes.
