Description
Godetia a genus of herbaceous plants of the family Ona-graceae and is very similar to the genus Clarkia and is often grouped together with it. There are about 20 species of Godetia in Western North and South America, found in coastal hills and mountains from British Columbia south to the San Francisco Bay Area and they are especially numerous in California. This plant does best in areas with cool summers and in moist, well-drained soil. Farewell-to-spring (Godetia amoe-na) and Whitney godetia (G. grandiflora or G. whitneyi) are grown as ornamental annuals with abundant, attractive, large flowers. There are many forms and varieties of various heights, with simple or double flowers of various shades of white, pink, and red. Godetia plants are used in flower beds and borders and as cut flowers. They are popular for wedding bouquets and place settings.
Three subspecies are currently recognised, though intermediate forms are commonly found: Clarkia amoena subsp. Amoena, Clarkia amoena subsp. huntiana, Clarkia amoena subsp. Whitneyi (Whitney's farewell to spring). Farewell to spring is commonly cultivated as a garden plant, and cultivated varieties are known.
This hardy annual is reminiscent of the anemone. It also goes by the charming name farewell-to-spring, perhaps because it blooms just as spring temperatures are rising. Godetia also goes by the name Clarkia, honoring Captain Clark of the Lewis and Clark expeditions. Other names attributed to godetias, which are members of the Onagraceae family, are Satin Flowers, Silk Flowers, Farewell-to-spring, Summer's Darling, Red Ribbons and Fairy Fans.
Godetia, is underappreciated with a funnel or trumpet shaped flower (cup-shaped blossoms) consisting of four petals that are arranged in clusters at the end of strong stems on the terminal spike. There are single and double forms in shades of pale pink, orange red and violet/pink with contrasting colors in most. Flowers with four broad petals 1.56 cm long measure approximately 3" across. Foliage is gray-green with slender, linear leaves 27 cm (3/4 to 2 3/4") long and 26 mm (3/4 to 2.5 inches) broad. Height ranges from 10 inches up to 21/2 feet (1 metre), and they grow about 10 inches wide. Shorter varieties have a mounding habit. When set in vase tight cut, closed flower buds will open if allowed to develop. The fruit is a dry capsule, which splits open when mature to release the numerous seeds.
The Satin Mix Godetia is a vigorous and extra early hybrid. The 1-3 inch blooms literally cover the dwarf plants. Blooms in a mixture of deep rose, lavender, lilac rose, pink, red and white bicolor, salmon, white and red. Eight 8-12 inches tall, 8-10 inches apart. Prefers full sun to light shade and cool nights. Extremely tolerant of poor soil. Excellent in rock gardens, borders and beds. Zones 9 and 10.
