Description
"Mrs. R.O. Backhouse" is classified as (2W-P) which means it is a Division 2 Narcissus of Large-Cupped Daffodil Cultivars, the perianth segments (petals) are white and the corona (cup) is pink.
The daffodil Mrs R.O. Backhouse' achieved instant fame in the gardening world for being the first with a pink cup and white perianth. Still on sale today, the daffodil was the culmination of more than 20 years' experimentation by a pioneering married couple, Robert and Sarah Backhouse.
Robert named the daffodil in 1923 in honour of his late wife, Sarah Elizabeth, nDodgson (1857-1921), who was renowned for her daffodil varieties. The Backhouses also had great success in hybridising lilies: Lilium marhan Mrs R.O. Backhouse' is still available.
Known for decades as THE pink daffodil, Mrs. R.O. Backhouse is one of the landmark bulbs of the now-vanished 20th century. Shes more truly ivory and apricot pink, with her trumpet colour fading to shell pink. She is so beautiful a veritable sunrise for those who watch closely that most modern pinks cant hold a candle to her.
Daffodils are the most cost effective, pest-free perennial plants available and make wonderful companions with other bulbs, perennials, annuals and flowering shrubs. They grow in almost all areas of the United States as long as there is a discernible winter. They are pest-free and when given ample sunlight, water and proper nutrition, will provide early spring color for many years. They are divided into 13 divisions according to their flower shape and heritage. Daffodils should be planted in full sun or at least 6 hours a day of sunlight after the leaves are on the trees and should be planted 3x the height of their bulb deep (3"-8"). The ADS defines DIVISION 2 - LARGE CUP as: "One flower to a stem; corona or cup more than one-third but less that equal to the length of the perianth segments or petals". This is the group that you see the most often used in gardens. Perfect for perennializing, picking, forcing and showing. Some of the showiest daffodils are in this division. 16+ cm bulbs unless otherwise noted; 4-5 per sq. ft; zones 3-8.
Narcissus is a genus of mainly hardy, mostly spring-flowering, bulbous perennials in the Amaryllis family, subfamily Amaryllidoideae. Various common names including daffodil, narcissus, and jonquil are used to describe all or some of the genus. They are native to meadows and woods in Europe, North Africa and West Asia, with a center of distribution in the Western Mediterranean. The number of distinct species varies widely depending on how they are classified, with the disparity due to similarity between species and hybridization between species. The number of defined species ranges from 26 to more than 60, depending on the authority. Species and hybrids are widely used in gardens and landscapes.
