Description
This piece has been featured in the FAA Group, "BUGs BUGs and more BUGS".
Mimulus Magic Rose is a warm rosy pink with a buttery yellow throat that fades to cream, highlighted with soft yellow stamens and pistils and dotted with darker rose/pink spots. It's lower petal fades to cream and it's jagged edged foliage is outlined in a cooler red.
Mimulus is a diverse plant genus, the monkey-flowers and musk-flowers. The about 150 species are currently placed in the family Phrymaceae. The genus had traditionally been placed in Scrophulariaceae. The removal of Mimulus from that family has been supported by studies of chloroplast DNA first published in the mid-1990s. Multiple studies of chloroplast DNA and two regions of nuclear rDNA suggest that the genera Phryma, Berendtiella, Hemichaena, Leucocarpus, Microcarpeae, Peplidium, Glossostigma, and Elacholoma are all derived from within Mimulus and would need to be rearranged.
It is recognized that there are two large groups of Mimulus species, with the largest group of species in western North America, and a second group with center of diversity in Australia. A few species also extend into eastern North America, eastern Asia and southern Africa. This enlarged group is a part of the newly redefined Phrymaceae.
The first ever grandiflora mimulus, Maximus surpasses other varieties with its highly attractive, massive 2-1/2" blooms. Its habit is more vigorous and upright than Magic, which complements the larger flowers. Producers love the plant habit, which has been tailored for 4" pot production, and the improved day length response that causes earlier flowering than other mimulus. Consumers love the gorgeous, vibrant blooms and fine performance in gardens and planters.
These low growing, bushy mimulus plants produce masses of tubular blooms, looking much like exotic, wide snapdragon flowers. Although monkey flowers are tender perennials, they are best treated as an annual for beds, containers and baskets, except in the mildest parts of the country. Mimulus 'Magic Rainbow' is ideal to add a bright splash of summer colour from June to August in lightly shaded, moist beds in the garden. Height and spread: 30cm (12”).
F1 Magic colours include a total of 18 color choices: Magic Blotch Mix, White Flame, Yellow Blotch, Yellow Flame, Crimson, Ivory, Ivory Bicolour, Orange, Red, Wine, Yellow, Yellow Bicolour, Pastel Pink Shades, Pastel Yellow Improved, Peach, Pastel Mixed, White with Blotch, and Mixed.
