Description

The garden chrysanthemum Wanda™ Lavender produces masses of lavender-pink blossoms on densely branched, dome-shaped, 8- to 14-inch (20 to 35 cm) plants. The 2-inch-wide (5 cm), many-petaled blooms open in early autumn, relatively late in the fall "mum" season. Plants grown under artificial conditions can be "forced" into flower at other seasons. Wanda™ Series cultivars were introduced by Yoder Brothers of Barberton, Ohio, and are available only as vegetatively propagated plants. The showy blooms and pungent, lobed leaves of garden chrysanthemums are staples of the autumn flower garden. These herbaceous perennials originated in eastern Asia, where they have been bred and selected for many centuries. Garden mums are customarily planted in late summer for seasonal display. Like most garden mums, Wanda™ Series cultivars thrive in full sun and a fertile, well-drained growing medium. Although typically planted as seasonal annuals, most garden mums can be used as border perennials in USDA hardiness zones 6 through 9. Pinch back plants in late spring or early summer to encourage a tidier habit and heavier fall flowering.
Mums are a low maintenance easy to grow fall plant. They are loaded with flowers and come in a wide selection of colors, flower types and bloom times. Wanda Lavender is Pink/Lavender Decorative that flowers late in the season. USDA Zone: Zones 3 - 9. Color: Pink/Lavender. Interesting Notes: Mums bloom in response to the shorter days and longer nights of fall. Normal rainfall is often sufficient for mums. During dry spells, water as needed to keep from wilting. The vigor listed for each mum relates to both plant height and width. There are three main growth habit's listed for mum's: Classic = old fashion garden mum habit or semi-upright. Mound = nice round habit but not quite a sphere. Sphere = very round with flowers all down the sides. Growing Tips for Homeowners: Mums grow best in full sun location. Mature plants should be planted far enough apart so the foliage does not touch. Plant at same soil level as original container and water in thoroughly. If planted in fall no fertilizer is needed until spring. Diseases are best prevented by mums being planted in well drained soil with proper spacing to allow for airflow. It is also important not to water late in the day so the foliage is dry come nightfall. Wait until spring to cut back dead stalks. To encourage branching and development of compact bushy plants, it is important to pinch back your garden mums in the spring as soon as the new growth is 4-6 inches tall. You can pinch about ½ of the new growth at the top of each and every shoot. Repeat this procedure throughout the summer whenever new shoots are 3-5 inches long. You can stop pinching around early to mid July.
