Description
A lovely carefree flower, this heattolerant annual shows off a wonderful selection of ringed flowers in bicolors of cream, claret, burnished red, and gold shades gracefully waiving atop wiry stems. Cut for continued bloom or shear midseason to renew. Grow in drifts in front of a low garden fence.
Calliopsis is also great for adding texture to the middle of the border. Many gardeners have found it to be deer-resistant, and it's a charming cut flower. Unless you find it available as established seedlings, plant from seed directly in the ground in spring in rich, well-drained soil. It's not fussy about fertilizer and likes ample water. C. x hybrida Easy enough for a novice to grow, but offering a wide selection of colours that even a seasoned gardener will appreciate. New breeding has added more colours to the standard Coreopsis of yellow and red to increase the range from burgundy to creamy white, with lots of bi-colours. 80cm/32"
This Coreopsis tinctoria (Asteraceae) is also known as Calliopsis, Golden Tickseed, Plains Coreopsis, Dyer's Calliopsis or Dyer's Coreopsis.
This underused native wildflower is a hardy annual that produces airy, daisylike flowers which are incredibly long blooming, from June throughout the summer and fall until frost. It's a top choice for wildflower mixes and prairie plantings because it reseeds freely and adds bright rays of sunshine-yellow wherever it grows.
