Ranunculus is a large genus of about 600 species of plants in the Ranunculaceae. Members of the genus include the buttercups, spearworts, water crowfoots and the lesser celandine.
The most common ranunculus species, Ranunculus asiaticus, grows up to 18 inches tall and bears small, camellia-like blooms in white, yellow, orange, pink or red. Most ranunculus species grow from bulbs or tuberous roots, but one species -- Ranunculus repens or creeping buttercup -- is an herbaceous perennial that grows to 12 inches tall with an 18-inch spread. Its flower stems can reach up to 24 inches in height. Creeping buttercup flowers are typically yellow.
Native to Asia and celebrated for its medicinal properties as well as its bright beauty, the small camellia-like ranunculus ranges from white to pink, red to yellow to orange. The name Ranunculus is Late Latin for "little frog," from rana "frog" and a diminutive ending. This probably refers to many species being found near water, like frogs. T...
