Schizanthus is a choice flowering annual from Chile, sometimes listed as S. x wisetonensis and often called butterfly flower because of the petals' butterfly shapes and extravagant streaks, spots and splashes of colour. Some varieties are more weatherproof than others. 'Hit Parade', for example, gives its best if protected under glass or when grown as a container plant in warm sheltered positions outdoors. It is an ideal cut flower, just a few of the brightly marked heads being sufficient to compose a startling vase arrangement.
A more vigorous, bushy strain for large containers and shady outdoor plantings. Formula mixture contains 12 inch plants with flowers in shades of white, pink, rose, red, lilac, violet, purple and many bicolors with graceful blotches and markings.
They are annual or biannual herbaceous plants, with attractive flowers and they belong to the Schizanthoideae subfamily of the solanaceae. The genus includes species native to Chile and Argentina, many species...
